5 Must Have Apps You Didn’t Know You Needed After You Buy a Home ( +a bonus for our veterans)
Are you thinking of moving or in the process of moving? Does it give you a headache just thinking about the disruption in your life and all of the things that you have to do? If so, keep reading for some apps (these are apps for your smartphone not appetizers, but those would be yummy too) that will help make the move less disruptive and get you settled into your new home and ready to rock the world.
According to NAR, in 2015 the average buyer moved 12 miles from their current home. But 25% of buyers moved upwards of 20 miles from their current residence. With 10% of people moving 30+ miles from their current residence. Moving that far isn’t without headaches of its own.
Combine that with the fact that the average person looks at their phone 150 times a day or once every 6 ½ minutes on average and you have the recipe for making moving easier! Having a few tools will keep those moving headaches to a minimum.
Here are 5 apps for your smartphone that you didn’t know you needed AFTER you purchase a home. But having these apps can keep you on track and make your move less of a hassle.
The 5 apps are:
· Home Inventory
· Home Scouting
Bonus, if you are a Veteran, you need this app too:
Home Inventory (available on your iPhone here and Google Play here )
This app can be a lifesaver. When the movers come over and pack up everything you own including your trash and put it on a track it helps to know what was in the truck! With this app, you can make a list of all your possessions. You can categorize your items and even take pictures. The app will even scan the SKU and log those for you. This is important if you have a loss during your move, but is also valuable AFTER you move in the event you ever have a loss where you need to file an insurance claim. Most people have a hard time remembering what they had when it comes to filing an insurance claim. Don’t believe me….try this. Close your eyes. Think about a room other than the one where you’re sitting. Ok, open your eyes and write down everything you own in that room. Now go check your list against the actual room. Did you get everything? Most items? Guessing not. Imagine if you had the emotional turmoil of a fire or robbery on top of this. I think you will see the value of this app.
TripCase (available on your iPhone here and Google Play here )
Once everything you own is packed up, you actually have to move. You might be moving down the street or across the country. Either way, you may be without your bed for a few days. This app will track all of your travel arrangements in one easy location and will allow you to share those arrangements with anyone via email. They even update you if anything on your reservation changes.
This app can come in handy when you’re traveling after you move. Looking for additional travel tips? Check out this article from a travel pro packed full of ideas to keep your travel as productive as if you never left home.
Waze (available on your iPhone here and Google Play here )
When you get to your new home, you have to learn where everything is and I’m not talking about where your cups are located; though you may have to do that too. I’m talking about getting used to your new surroundings and learning new traffic patterns or how to get to the grocery store. Waze is a GPS system that allows other drivers to share locations of wrecks or traffic jams with each other. This app not only helps you get around, but it also helps you get around traffic jams!
Sworkit (available on your iPhone here and Google Play here )
This is an extension of the travel tips. You never want to miss your workout. Sworkit provides customized workouts that you can do anywhere. With this app there is never an excuse to miss your workout. (check out the Veterans and founders of this app on twitter @B_Charters and @gregorybcoleman)
HomeScouting (available on your iPhone here and Google Play here use VIP code pearlyspad to get free access with no ads)
According to NAR, “among all generations of homebuyers, the first step in the home buying process is looking online for properties for sale.” So you might not think you needed an app like this after your purchase, but this app has access to all of the solds as well as listings. This app lets you be the ultimate nosey neighbor without ever having to leave your home. In addition, with access to all of the solds, you can keep up with the value of your largest investment- your home.
BONUS APP – Scout (available directly from Scout here )
If you are a veteran, don’t miss out on this app. It was created by a veteran for veterans (you can check them out on Twitter @swmeek or @sandboxx for their military communications app). This app lets you see all of the discounts available to veterans (both active duty and retired) at local businesses. You can search by type of company or by map. If you find a discount that isn’t listed, you can add it yourself to let others know about it. Such a great way to honor veterans and thank them for their service.
Hopefully you will find these apps useful and they will reduce the headaches of moving.
